Written
and performed as prohibition propaganda, these anthems were intended
to tell vivid stories, often pathetic ones, of lost dignity, crippled
relationships and impaired health. In short, they suggest that alcohol
consumption is responsible for all of society's ills. Today, these
songs seem woefully naïve and they resonate with humor. But they
continue to stand as accurate and tuneful illustrations of a by-gone
era, evoking uncomplicated times, explicit values, and a failed
social experiment that removed individual responsibility from the
taproom.
